Position Status: Full time, salaried, exempt  

Work Location: Negotiable. We have offices in Florence, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., and are open to remote work from other geographic locations in the United States.

Position summary:

We’re looking for an online digital manager who understands the importance of media and technology in our lives and is committed to engaging people in the fight for our rights to connect and communicate. We’re looking for a digital specialist who enjoys loading, coding and building out digital tools to support our organizing and mobilizing efforts. Free Press is a nimble and fast-paced organization and our digital team is always doing something to help advance our campaign work, pull off field actions, hold online events, meet our fundraising goals and engage meaningfully with our growing list of 1.4 million members.

The digital manager will help expand and deepen Free Press’ online presence and engagement efforts by anchoring the backend work that makes our digital engagement possible. This will entail working collaboratively with the digital team to manage the backend production of our digital content. In addition, we seek someone who can develop and engage with a rigorous testing and analytics program to inform our email- and online-engagement strategies and help increase engagement in campaigns and online fundraising.

The digital manager reports to the digital director. This job requires a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend work during peak campaign cycles or in the lead-up to special events. Occasional domestic travel is required.

Free Press comprises two separate corporate entities, Free Press and Free Press Action Fund. Both entities share the same overall mission, office space and employees. This job description refers collectively to the two organizations under the name “Free Press.” 

Primary responsibilities:

  • Email-outreach production: Manage the production of all outgoing email outreaches and creation of new pages using best practices. Work with digital director to develop and drive email-list segmentation strategies to maximize engagement and list strength. Stay up to date on newly added ActionKit features and test and implement those that are relevant. Ensure good email reputation and deliverability, and the strength of our overall email-list health.

  • Analytics and testing: Regularly conduct and analyze testing to identify effective strategies, messaging and formatting of email communications. Generate and share regular reports that show engagement and growth in online communities. Increase Free Press’ audience size and engagement metrics.

  • Maintain and update digital platforms: Work with the digital director to manage, improve and update digital platforms and technology to support our online advocacy/campaign work

  • Expand digital engagement to new platforms: Work to optimize mobile-action taking and develop plans to expand digital engagement beyond email.

  • Racial equity: Free Press is a multiracial organization committed to advancing racial equity in our work, which includes being explicit about the impact of media and technology issues on communities of color and building alliances with racial-justice organizations.

  • Learning and skill development: Keep informed of advances in technology, online organizing and mobilizing strategies, and innovative thinking within the field, and apply them to Free Press’ work.

Skills/Experience:

  • Extensive experience working with CRM technology, constructing and troubleshooting email templates and webpages, and QA’ing HTML emails

  • Experience integrating and working across CMS/CRM technologies

  • 4+ years of directly relevant experience working with a digital firm or progressive advocacy organization

  • Experience managing vendors

  • Experience with ActionKit or other CRMs

  • Fluency in HTML, CSS, SQL and JavaScript

  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting problems in a rapid-response environment

  • Experience with any of the following: Amazon Web Services, GitHub and/ or Cloudflare

  • Experience working with APIs (RESTFUL or XML RPC)

  • Understanding of Django

  • Q/A testing experience

  • Experience balancing competing priorities and needs

  • Experience with digital-security practices and implementation

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or 5 years of experience developing successful digital-organizing or mobilizing efforts

  • Strong interest in media and technology issues

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

  • Attention to detail, flexibility and demonstrated capacity to operate in a fast-paced environment

Bonus skills and experience:

  • Fluency in Spanish

  • Graphic-design skills

  • Extensive backend-development skills

Compensation:
Free Press is committed to offering competitive pay and generous benefits, including group medical, dental, vision and short- and long-term disability insurance, retirement benefits, health-reimbursement accounts and paid family leave. Annual paid time off is a total of nine weeks, including vacation, health-care leave and holidays.

This position is categorized as a “tier two” position, in the context of five possible functional classifications at Free Press, ranging from coordinator (tier one) to executive (tier five).

The typical starting salary for a digital manager at Free Press who meets the above qualifications is $62,000–67,000.

Starting salary is negotiated based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
